Prepay Your 2018 Property Tax Bill

From the Mayor of Jersey City, Steven Fulop:

IMPORTANT and PLEASE SHARE: While the Republican tax plan in Washington is terrible for working families, and for New Jersey, we are going to do everything we can to minimize the hardship here in Jersey City. We have changed the city policy that we will allow residents to pre-pay their 2018 property taxes so that they can still capitalize on the existing SALT laws today. You can do this by following the same way you normally pay your taxes between now and the end of 2017.  Read more here.

If you own a home or condo in Hoboken, you can prepay your property taxes for 2018.  The City of Hoboken tax assessor’s office has to receive your check by December 28 and it must have the block and lot in the note section along with a note indicating it is for 2018 so they don’t think you accidently overpaid.  If your taxes are escrowed as part of your mortgage payment, you might want speak to your bank first.  Also, we do not provide tax advice.  Speak to your tax professional to see if prepayment is in your interest.  If you are subject to alternative minimum tax, it may not be.  Again – call your accountant.
